Rescue isn’t just a moment – it’s a lifetime of love.

All dogs leaving the municipal kennels in Tomar, Portugal will be microchipped, receive a rabies vaccination and will be sterilised at an appropriate age.
When adopting a puppy, they will have received puppy vaccines and the adopter must sterilise the dog at an appropriate age by their UK vet. All dogs travelling to the UK will be issued with an EU passport.
Dog Rehoming gets all dogs adopted, tested for leishmaniasis, tick fever and heartworm. If a dog tests positive for leishmaniasis or tick fever, the municipal vet will commence treatment.
Your dog will be health checked and receive a de-wormer two days before travelling and their passport will be updated with that information, a requirement for travelling to the UK.
We also cover the cost of €50 to create the paperwork required for a dog to travel to the UK.
We set up a home visit with an independent, UK, voluntary home checker who will make an informal visit to your home to assess your suitability. We will have already developed an online relationship with you and asked the right questions but it is essential for us to receive an assessment from home checkers to ensure that the dog is being adopted into a suitable home.
UK adopters pay the transport costs. We use http://www.purrfectpettransport.com and the cost is £520 paid directly to the transporter. They deliver to your home.
Once a dog is reserved for adoption, we liaise with the adopter, the municipal vet and the transporter to ensure a smooth hand over of the dog. We work to get the dog into a foster home once reserved. This enables us to further assess the dog and you will receive lots of updates.
Please remember to register your dog’s microchip with a UK database such as Petlog as they will be registered to SIAC, the Portuguese database.
We can help with matching the perfect dog to suit our adopters and work closely with them throughout the adoption process.
Please remember that your new dog has been on a long journey, once leaving the kennels, into foster care and then transported to its new home, so will require time to settle in to a new environment.
Our fosterers and transporter provide the best possible care for our dogs and their welfare is paramount to us all.
We look forward to hearing that the dogs arrive relaxed and happy but also ask the adopter to be aware that they need to come into a calm environment and may need to decompress. Some may sleep a lot at first. Others will display excitement and some will need space. Other dogs will stroll into a house as if they have always lived there! You’ll know how to interact with your new family member once you meet them.
We love to see lots of photos once your dog has settled and always share them with the people at the municipal kennels as they form close attachments to the dogs.
Thank you for adopting or considering adopting a dog through Dog Rehoming Portugal EU and UK.
