Muffin was found on the street and was brought to the canil by the firefighters. A strong, medium-large dog with a beautiful short light-brown coat and a calm, steady presence.

He has an independent, composed personality and isn’t an overly affectionate dog who constantly demands attention. He enjoys being around people but also appreciates his space and a quiet environment.

He is already castrated, microchipped, and vaccinated against rabies.

This is not a beginner dog. He would do best with an experienced handler who understands strong breeds and can provide clear boundaries, structure, and stability.

This dog will only be placed through responsible adoption, and the following conditions are mandatory:

Charles came to the canil in January from the kennels at Ferreira de Zêzere after being found on the streets and is one year old.

He’s a shy boy who finds life in a kennel stressful. He did not want to go back into his kennel.

Initially Charles was nervous with us but became more relaxed and we know that he would continue to gain confidence in a loving home.

He’s sterilised, microchipped and will receive a rabies vaccination. There is no adoption fee.

Charles is a Podengo mix, Portugal’s national dog, who often sadly end up in awful conditions, yet they are incredibly intelligent and loyal family dogs. His first year hasn’t been great but Charles would love to show you how wonderful he really is.

Scott is a handsome puppy, full of energy and a joy for life and he’s looking for a home where he will receive all the training and socialisation a growing puppy needs to thrive. He’s living in a kennel with other young pups and enjoys playing with them, but he needs to be in a home environment with structure, training and an abundance of love.

Scott will receive a rabies vaccination, core vaccination, microchip and mandatory sterilisation, at no cost to his adopter, at an appropriate age. This will be carried out by the municipal vet.

Lake came into the canil with many other dogs, taken from a home with inadequate living conditions.

He is a medium sized, friendly boy who’s special job is to greet everyone entering their kenneled play park.

Lake would love a garden to play and a great home to relax in.

Maya is looking for a great home!

She’s going to be a big dog when fully grown as she’s still just a puppy, so she’ll need all of the training and socialisation that a puppy requires. She will do best with an active family who will take her on daily walks.

Maya is a typical, friendly puppy who responds well to people and she lives happily in a kennel with other dogs. She seemed fine with cats but we can test her further if required.

Bentley came to the canil as a member of a large pack of dogs. He has the same short legs, big paws and long back as the rest of the gang. He was being bullied by a big dog, so he’s been removed and is now safe in a kennel with a few other dogs.

Bentley needs an adopter who can support him in overcoming his timid nature and provide the safety that he needs to thrive. He is submissive in nature but we want to see his mischievous side presenting itself. Another dog in the home would be perfect for Bentley, to show him the ropes.

Raysa came into the municipal canil in October 24 with her sister, Pepa due to their owners poor health. She would love a home with owners who will take her on long walks and provide the training and stimulation for her to thrive. She is friendly with other dogs and affectionate with people.

Willow was removed from the most appalling conditions, yet still she has a joy for life and is super friendly. She gets on well with the other dogs in her kennel and didn’t seem bothered by the outside cats at the canil. She has not ever experienced a loving home but we believe that she’ll thrive in a great home with a garden to explore, daily walks and a comfortable home life.

Salvador is a calm, thoughtful boy who came into the canil in December 2025, after being found on the streets. He’s well-behaved and composed, with a quiet confidence that makes him a lovely presence to have around.

Salvador enjoys sniffing and exploring the world at his own pace – he’s more of an observant companion than a lap dog. He isn’t overly affectionate and doesn’t constantly seek physical contact, so he’d suit someone who values shared space, peaceful walks, and companionship without the need for constant cuddles.

Buzz is a bouncy dog with energy that he is unable to release in his kennel. He has been at the canil for a year, far too long for such a handsome and sociable dog. He absolutely loved his walk and would benefit from a family who will provide the exercise, training and stimulation that he needs to thrive. He is very friendly with people and other dogs.

Ava is a beautiful girl who recently came to the canil, found on the streets. She’s great with other dogs and very friendly with people. No cats.

We first posted Spike in September 23 and he has now been at the canil for two years despite being full of joy, friendly and a handsome boy!

Spike loves to go on a walk and behaves impeccably. He would be such a great addition to anyone adopting him. He gets on very well with his kennel mates and we can cat test him if required.

There are many sandy coloured, short-haired podengo-type dogs in the Canil, and it’s been hard for Tejo to make his mark. Sadly he’s been in there since he was 2 months old and when you get to know him it’s so hard to understand why.

Tejo has grown up into an absolute gentleman. He’s friendly but never overwhelming, he has a permanently sunny nature despite what life has thrown at him, and he’s a delight to walk with. He has a placid temperament with a hint of playfulness, and he’s attentive and affectionate. Tejo loves his walks but never pulls. He is not bothered by traffic, cats or other dogs.

As 2024 comes to a close we feel so sad our Tejo is still with us and he would like nothing better than to start the new year with his own human or two to take care of.

I would observe Rocky at the canil, silent and stìll, watching, almost as if he was trying to make himself invisible. He’s only three years old and has spent most of his life at the canil.

Now look at him! A few weeks in foster care and he has transformed into an engaging, bright and happy dog. He just needed a chance to shine.

He loves going for walks and is great in a car.

Dexy has been at the canil since 4/22 and he has never given up on finding his forever home.

He still greets anyone showing him any kindness with lots of affection. Dexy is just one of many overlooked dogs at the canil who just need a chance to prove what wonderful dogs they are. Dexy wants that so badly.

Another great dog who has been at the canil for too long, seeks loving home.

Núbia is friendly, playful and would make a wonderful family dog who would enjoy walks and lots of stimulation, with some training. Equally, she would love cuddles and affection, as much as you can give!

She’s good with other dogs and seemed OK with cats, although we can test her again if required.

Loquita is a stunning dog! She is a Castro Laboreiro mix. These dogs are renowned for their livestock guardian skills and calm nature and Loquita was extremely calm and great with the roaming cats and other dogs at the canil. They are quite a rare breed, originating from northern Portugal. Apart from their livestock guardian skills, they are also used to protect the women when the husbands are away working. She had lots of attention from the volunteers at the canil and she loved that interaction with people. She has been in the municipal canil in Tomar since March and is ready for adoption as she’s already sterilised, microchipped and has a rabies vaccination. Loquita needs a secure garden and she was also very good on a lead, so would be a pleasure to walk.

We are currently looking for adoption in Portugal only as she’s a big girl to transport and we feel that a rural home would be more suited to her needs.

Ralph is full of fun and energy for a ten year old dog and hopefully has many years ahead of him to enjoy life outside of a kennel and in a loving home.

He has the most beautiful conker brown coat and is quite stunning.
